NewYork-Presbyterian was ranked 4th in the nation in Cardiology & Heart Surgery in the U.S. News & World Report "Best Hospitals" 2019-2020 survey, the highest rank in this category to be achieved by a hospital in New York City this year. This achievement reflects the expertise and leadership in cardiothoracic surgery for which NewYork-Presbyterian is known.
Weill Cornell Medicine/NewYork-Presbyterian offers a traditional two-year Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency training program. Upon successful completion, residents are eligible for the American Board of Thoracic Surgery Examination. The residency program provides a solid foundation in conventional open heart surgery as well as minimally invasive approaches to cardiac and thoracic procedures. Residents leave the program as outstanding technical cardiac and thoracic surgeons.

Institutional collaboration
Residents complete a three- or six-month rotation at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC), located across the street from Weill Cornell Medicine, giving them dedicated experience in lung and esophageal surgeries.

WCM is a leader in innovative approaches such as percutaneous valve surgery and minimally invasive approaches to lung and thoracic procedures, and features a robust ventricular assist device (VAD) program.
